The Barred Plymouth Rock (BPR) was first developed in the 19th century in New England. In 1869 they were first exhibited as an all-American breed. They are renowned for their egg laying and utility purposes. They were once the most common bird in America. The breeds we have at the PRC were obtained from Donald Shaver, the founder of Shaver Poultry Breeding Farms. They had been maintained from 50 generations of pedigree breeding. They were donated in 2003, when Shaver Farms discontinued them commercially, and have been maintained, as is, since that time.
