What makes it unique?

The Milling Process: Unlike standard "flax meal" which is often a byproduct of oil extraction (meaning the good fats are gone), E & E uses a proprietary cold-milling process. This keeps the Omega-3 fatty acids intact and stable.

Stability: Natural flaxseed contains an enzyme that causes it to go rancid within hours of being ground. E & E Flax is "shelf-stable," meaning it can stay in your barn for months without spoiling, even though it's already ground.

Human-Grade Standard: Even when sold for horses, they often use human-grade flax (Linum usitatissimum). This means it has lower "dockage" (fewer weeds, pebbles, or dust) than standard agricultural-grade flax.

Common Uses

For Horses (Most Common)

Skin & Coat: It's famous for creating a "dappled" or "mirror-like" shine on horses. It helps with "Sweet Itch" (allergic reactions to midges) by reducing skin inflammation.

Joint Health: The high Omega-3 content helps reduce systemic inflammation, which is great for older horses with stiffness.

Weight Gain: It’s a "cool" energy source—meaning it provides calories through fats rather than sugars, so it doesn't make the horse hyper or "hot."

Hoof Health: Hooves need natural oils to resist water. The hoof solar pad is like a gel pad and needs some oils for its proper function. This gives better cushioning for the hoof internal structures and reduces stress.

For Humans

Digestive Health: Because it's cold-milled, it’s highly digestible for humans. One or two tablespoons in a smoothie or oatmeal provides a massive hit of fiber and ALA (Alpha-Linolenic Acid). Some experts feel flax has an anti-colic effect due to the oil and fiber content as well as an anti-ulcer effect due to the quality fiber.

Heart Health: Helps manage cholesterol levels and supports cardiovascular function.

Quick Comparison: E & E vs. Whole Flax

Feature

Whole Flax

E & E Flax (Milled)

Digestibility

Low (hard shell often passes through whole)

Very High (pre-broken for absorption)

Convenience

Must be ground fresh daily

Ready to use out of the bag

Shelf Life

Long (if shell is intact)

Long (due to stabilization process)

Nutrient Loss

High if not ground

Minimal

A small warning: If you are transitioning a horse onto E & E Flax, do it slowly. Because of the high oil content, a sudden large dose can cause loose stools

The secret to why E & E Flax (and flaxseed in general) is the "gold standard" for coat quality comes down to one specific nutrient: Alpha-Linolenic Acid (ALA), an essential Omega-3 fatty acid.

Think of it as internal conditioning. While sprays and shampoos work from the outside in, flax works from the inside out. Here is why it’s so effective:

Reducing Systemic Inflammation

Most animal diets (especially those high in grain or corn) are heavy in Omega-6 fatty acids. While necessary, too much Omega-6 promotes inflammation.

The Flax Effect: Flax has a very high Omega-3 to Omega-6 ratio. By balancing these, it calms skin inflammation.

The Result: If a horse or dog has "itchy" skin, dandruff, or hives, the flax settles the irritation, allowing the coat to grow in thick and smooth rather than brittle and broken.

Sebum Production (The "Mirror" Shine)

Magnesium helps muscles, but Omega-3s help the sebaceous glands. These glands produce sebum, the natural oil that coats each hair follicle.

The Result: Increased healthy oil production gives the coat that "slick" look where light bounces off it (often called "dapples" in horses). It also creates a natural water-repellent barrier.
