The Rhode Island Red (RIR) were developed in the late 1800’s to be a hardy, good dual purpose bird bred from crosses with brown leghorns, cochins, brahmas, and red malays. They became the state bird of Rhode Island and was once a very common breed. The stock we have at the PRC were obtained from Donald Shaver, the founder of Shaver Poultry Breeding Farms. They had been maintained from 50 generations of pedigree breeding. They were donated in 2003, when Shaver Farms discontinued them commercially, and have been maintained as is, since that time.
